Matt Wilson Arts & Crafts "Reboot"

Drummer Matt Wilson is certainly one of present-day jazz's most entertaining performers. He also happens to be quite good at his craft. The fact that Wilson has received a pair of five-star reviews (magazine's highest rating) from DownBeat Magazine supports that premise. So does Wilson receiving the Jazz Journalists Association's 2018 "Musician of the Year"; with JJA adding to its assessment by naming his Honey & Salt - Wilson's music-and-spoken-word recording that honors Carl Sandburg, and which he performed here three years ago - as its "Record of the Year."
We're pleased to have Wilson return to the Jazz Series, perfectly so as he arrives upon the Spring Solstice. This time around, the Knoxville, Illinois, native who enjoyed his first success in Boston before moving permanently to New York more than 25 years ago, now, "reboots" one of his earlier and another of his widely acclaimed projects: "Arts & Crafts." The group's moniker, derived from the drummer's self-titled release that dates to 2006, holds an every-so-often musical reunion. Always a quartet, this iteration includes a trio of the drummer's dynamic and equally talented compatriots: trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, organist/pianist Gary Versace and bassist Martin Wind.
The steady-as-he-goes Wilson has released some 15 titles as a leader - including three Arts & Crafts entries - and appeared on close to 500 other titles as well as working on stage in support of a wide variety of noteworthy musicians including, but surely not limited to: Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Dewey Redman, Hank Jones, Charlie Haden, John Scofield, Joanne Brackeen, Denny Zeitlin, Herbie Hancock, Ken Pleplowski and Larry Goldings, to name but a few.
As much a jazz cheerleader and educator as he is a working musician, Wilson's enthusiasm toward and respect for the audience remains among his measurable positivity, attributes and arsenal.
