Prior to his position at MU, Dr. Griffith was a member of the music faculty at the University of California-Davis, Santa Clara University, and American River College. A native of Monterey, California, Dr. Griffith was a participant in the Monterey Jazz Festival’s youth education programs and was inspired to become a musician by the mentoring he received through these programs. Dr. Griffith holds degrees from The New School (B.A. Jazz Studies), California State University, Sacramento (M.M. Music Performance), and the University of Colorado, Boulder (D.M.A. Jazz Studies).

 As a performer, he has shared the stage with a notable list of jazz greats and has performed in clubs and venues across the United States, Europe, and Japan. In addition to performing, Dr. Griffith is also a composer and arranger whose works have been premiered across the US and in Brazil.  An active clinician and festival judge, Dr. Griffith has adjudicated the Reno Jazz Festival, CSU-Stanislaus Jazz Festival, Gold Mine Country Jazz Fest, and the Elk Grove Jazz Festival, among others.

Ben Colagiovanni Quartet

Ben Colagiovanni is a jazz pianist and composer currently based in Los Angeles, where he is studying composition and piano with Grammy nominated jazz pianist Alan Pasqua. 
Ben graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2019 with a B.M. in music composition, where he studied with Dr. Carolina Heredia, Dr. Stefan Freund, and Dr. W. Thomas McKenney. He also studied classical piano with Dr. Peter Miyamoto. 
  Ben has had his music premiered in many venues throughout Missouri including Powell Hall, the Sheldon concert hall, Jazz at the Bistro, and the Forest Park Jewel Box in St. Louis, and the Blue Room in Kansas City.  His compositions have been performed by such notable ensembles as the St. Louis Symphony, Deviant Septet, and Zodiac Trio, and jazz luminaries including Sean Jones, Christian McBride, and Terell Stafford. He has received recognition for his classical works from ASCAP (2019 Morton Gould Finalist) and MTNA (2016 Young Artist winner), and has also been recognized for his scholarly writing on the topics of Thelonious Monk and the Skandalkonzert of 1913 respectively.

The tentet is a new collaboration between veterans on the CoMo jazz scene and performers from across Missouri. Our goal is to present new and challenging music that showcases many of the great performers in the group.
