It’s only appropriate to have “jazz royalty” represented during the silver Anniversary, right? And, so we do. We couldn’t be happier that vocalist Catherine Russell, the daughter of Luis Russell – Louis Armstrong’s musical director for a decade in the 1940s-1950s, and Carlene Ray, bassist for the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, the famed all-women’s band from the 1930s-1940s, accepted our invitation to participate in the 25th Anniversary Celebration. She last visited us in 2014, as the special guest with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis with her initial visit coming a number of seasons before that leading her small group at Murry’s – as she will do this time around

Russell, whose diverse career includes singing backup in bands led by David Bowie, Steely Dan and Boz Scaggs among others, is perhaps the world’s finest present-day interpreter of repertoire that incorporates Ma Rainey, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Tin Pan Alley all the way forward to classic blues and R&B from the 1950s. Amazingly, she was not included in the documentary Twenty Feet From Stardom. That’s okay, though. She is stardom. The GRAMMY®-winning singer’s latest release is Alone Together (Dot Time). She also contributes to the recently released Bolden as well as appearing and singing in the film.

A one-woman reclamation project for classic jazz, blues and r&b from the ’20s to the ’50s, Russell likes to have a good time, and her mood was infectious."

- Downbeat

"Russell sings in a marvelously full, rich alto and hangs just a hint of a blue scrim over her cheerful, straight-shooting, girl-next-door innocence."

- Seatle Times
