Under the best of care and watchful eyes of those who know what they are doing, the piano trio is one of jazz’s most precious and long-standing configurations. We’re fortunate this season to have two such remarkable threesomes – stylistically different and varied in sound, despite the same classic instrumentation. Both entries, however, will stir not only the heart but also the soul.

First up is one of the Jazz Series’ great allies, pianist Bruce Barth. Barth has made a number of previous Jazz Series appearances, most notably with trumpeter Terell Stafford and in special-event duos, first with saxophonist Steve Wilson – a performance the Jazz Series captured and later released internationally as HOME: Live in Columbia, Missouri – and then subsequently with clarinetist-saxophonist Anat Cohen.

Simply put, Barth, whose “singer accompaniments” credits also include stints with Tony Bennett, Diana Krall, Jane Monheit and many other vocalists, is one of the best pianists out there with his melodic and lyrical, yet percussive, style. We thought it was time for him to own center stage. A consummate professional, Barth continues to surround himself with players equal to the task. In this instance, he’s joined by bassist Dave Baron, and drummer Montez Coleman, the St. Louisan who, likewise, owns a string of A-plus credits including measurable time with Roy Hargrove and the late Mulgrew Miller.
