A duo of kindred spirits and long-time bandmates open the 2019/2020 Silver Anniversary Concert Season in style. Kiddingly, we refer to pianist Peter Martin and Brazilian guitarist Lubambo as “two-fifths of vocalist Dianne Reeves’ Group.” That’s because the two of them have worked with the singer for many years with the former serving as her long-time musical director/arranger incorporating the Good Night & Good Luck soundtrack Reeves’ sole “We Always Swing® Jazz Series appearance is, likewise, Lubambo’s.
Martin has appeared a bit more frequently – as a member of Newport Jazz Festival @ 60 All-Stars as well as leading a trio into Murry’s – a group that included bassist Reuben Rodgers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. The St. Louis native spent much time in New Orleans, only to return to Missouri in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Count among his Crescent City associates Alvin Batiste, Brian Blade and Nicholas Payton with additional time recording with Chris Botti Betty Carter, Wynton Marsalis and Christian McBride.
Lubambo, long-been considered one of the world’s foremost Brazilian guitarists, is equally well-versed in jazz traditions such as bebop, hard-bop and beyond. A co-founder of the Trio da Paz threesome, Lubambo arrived in the United States in the mid-1980s where it didn’t take long to for him to become an in-demand musician. A short and varied list includes working with: Kathleen Battle, Kenny Barron, Harry Belafonte, Michael Brecker, Paquito D'Rivera, Kurt Elling, Diana Krall, Yo-Yo Ma, Herbie Mann, Wynton Marsalis and Grover Washington Jr.
