An immensely talented and thoughtful pianist, Aaron Diehl returns to Murry’s leading his latest trio. Classically trained and steeped in the ways of every phase of jazz from its earliest times right up to the present, the Columbus, Ohio, native has now been a fixture on the New York jazz Scene for more than a decade.
Fifteen years ago, as a 17-year-old, he gained notice at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Essentially Ellington” competition; In 2011, he was named the winner of the 2011 Cole Porter Fellowship presented by the American Pianists Association. A year later, the Académie du Jazz in France, gave him the prestigious Prix du Jazz Classique for his album Live at the Players. He was the 2014 Monterey Jazz Festival Commission Artist, becoming one of the youngest artists to receive the honor, composing “Three Streams of Expression” that he dedicated to John Lewis, the influential pianist and composer who was a co-founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Diehl is the 2013 recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Up-And-Coming Artist.
