We’re pleased to include in this season’s fare, one of the seminal working and most original sounding piano trios of the last nearly two decades. Led by pianist Brad Mehldau, a restless and curious soul who also happens to be one of jazz’s most technically gifted and improvisationally creative artists, we will also hear the talents of bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jeff Ballard. Hearing this group in a recital hall setting should not be missed.
Mehldau continues to explore different genres and styles of music in any number of configurations and with any number of people. Collectively, his work now incorporates a tremendously vast repertoire; his performances draw from the classical realm to the worlds of pop and rock selections as well as, obviously so, from jazz’s many sides. Mehldau, originally so, reinterprets and reimagines most everything in that he touches. If one of jazz’s primary tenets is to find your own voice, then it’s safe to say, Mehldau, who first appeared in Columbia in 1990, certainly met that challenge some time ago.

“The pianist Brad Mehldau has led this iteration of his pace-setting trio … since 2005, and it has evolved into a graceful powerhouse, equally savvy about groove and harmony.”

- New York Times

“Three musicians who share a common aesthetic … in which gestures are stated softly and with utmost subtlety ... When music-making becomes this transparent, listeners can relish details of texture and voicing.”

- Chicago Tribune
