This “small group” may just catch us all by surprise. Not really. Take one-third equal parts of vibraphonist Joe Locke, organist Pat Bianchi – who makes his first Jazz Series appearance – and “The Marvelous One,” drummer Marvin “Smitty” Smith, mix them together, and you’ve got a recipe that smokes.
Locke, who leads the trio, is an inordinately resourceful and multi-dimensional vibraphonist recognized as one of the true vibraphone torch-bearers. Bianchi, likewise, is on the front lines of today’s organists; for his part Smith, the former “Tonight Show” drummer with Branford Marsalis who’s last visit here was two season’s ago as a member of the “MVP Jazz Quartet,” he’s as natural a percussion spirit as there is on planet earth.
Billed as a “contemporary take on the organ trio template,” this is a trilateral commission of three equals, each of whom have a deep sense of tradition and their prime directive, however they possess a deep commitment to keep pushing the music forward. All we can say is hold on to your seat for this one. The fact that it’s holiday time… That’s good, because this is going to be one joyous treat. As Locke observed from the start, “The hook up between us was instantaneous.”

“With any group of musicians, it comes down to listening. And Pat and Smitty, besides being ‘standard bearers’ on their instruments, are both masters at the art of listening. The hook up between us was instantaneous.”

- Joe Locke

“Joe Locke is a wonderful young man who's all about the music, all the time! You can hear it in every note he plays.”

- Bobby Hutcherson
