Tootie Heath Trio feat. Emmet Cohen

This is the kind of show the Jazz Series likes to present: A multi-generational season-opener that sets the tone and features a dynamic young pianist and bassist who make their first Jazz Series appearance, and who are paired with an octogenarian drummer, who also happens to be a member of one of jazz’s most legendary and distinguished families.
Albert “Tootie” Heath (b. 1935) is perhaps one of jazz’s more underappreciated drummers. A sampling of his hundreds of recording and bandstand credits includes work with John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Coleman Hawkins, Wes Montgomery, Nancy Wilson, Charles Mingus, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver and Clark Terry. And, that’s just for starters. With his two elder brothers, bassist Percy Heath (1923-2005), and the still-active, miraculous saxophonist Jimmy Heath (b. 1926), the youngest sibling co-formed the famed Heath Bros. Tootie Heath not only personifies jazz history, but he is jazz history.
