Trumpeter Hermon Mehari, a Jefferson City native and graduate of UMKC Conservatory of Music & Dance under the watchful eye of Bobby Watson, makes his first Jazz Series appearance as a leader. The former member of the cooperative Diverse, and a 2014 semi-finalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition, Mehari has been living in France the past year. He’s just released his critically acclaimed self-produced debut recording, Bleu.
On the making of Bleu, Mehari says, “I knew I had to put an album out and I had to establish myself as a leader. I had the concept of recording jazz in a variety of ways, and I knew from an aesthetic point of view what I wanted it to sound like. I didn’t want any one song to sound like the next.”
Mehari returns to the United States – and the Jazz Series – with three members of the recording project, who also happen to be fellow up-and-coming artists; the quartet not only is part of the 2017/2018 subscription series, but also will “host” the Jazz Series’ Annual Children’s Concerts.
