We’re extremely pleased to present Regina Carter, one of the world’s most talented violinists who returns to the Jazz Series after more than a decade.  Not only is Ms. Carter yet another standout jazz performer with Detroit roots, but she is also a 2006 MacArthur Fellow recipient, a multiple GRAMMY® winner and a musician with a great sense of history who, a number of years ago now, was one of the very few people invited by the Italian government to play Paganini’s violin.
As it turns out 2017 is the Centennial of a host of jazz luminaries: Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Buddy Rich, Lena Horne – and Ella Fitzgerald. Carter, who had a direct connection to Fitzgerald dedicates her newest recording to “The First Lady of Song.”  Due out at year’s end is Simply Ella, which is also the subtitle of the violinist’s upcoming tour and performances. We couldn’t be more pleased with the content – and the setting – a cabaret-style presentation in Kimball Ballroom at Stephens College. Guaranteed to be one of 2016/2017’s many, many highlights.

Carter will place the instrumental execution of Ms. Fitzgerald’s work in the trusted hands of her working ensemble: pianist Xavier Davis, guitarist Marvin Sewell, bassist Chris Lightcap and drummer Alvester Garnett, a foursome that individually and collectively brings a lot to the musical table.
