Regina Carter: "Simply Ella"Photo Credit Courtesy of Artist We’re extremely pleased to present Regina Carter, one of the world’s most talented violinists who returns to the Jazz Series after more than a decade. Not only is Ms. Carter yet another standout jazz performer with Detroit roots, but she is also a 2006 MacArthur Fellow recipient, a multiple GRAMMY® winner and a musician with a great sense of history who, a number of years ago now, was one of the very few people invited by the Italian government to play Paganini’s violin. Carter will place the instrumental execution of Ms. Fitzgerald’s work in the trusted hands of her working ensemble: pianist Xavier Davis, guitarist Marvin Sewell, bassist Chris Lightcap and drummer Alvester Garnett, a foursome that individually and collectively brings a lot to the musical table.
An Intimate Conversation We’re pleased to announce that Ms. Carter’s concert will be preceded the day before, January 22, with an intimate one-to-one conversation/Q&A with Dr. Maya Gibson, Assistant Professor, Musicology, MU School of Music. The special conversation is FREE & OPEN to the public, and takes place at Whitmore Recital Hall, School of Music. |

Regina Carter: Violin "Carter has become something of a genre-blind and stylistically-inclusive musicologist, marrying her violin, family history and more to music of various shapes and origins." - All About Jazz "...her unfolding of a theme is so revealing, and her improv ideas so fresh, that listeners soon sense they can’t afford to miss a beat." - The Guardian |
