Hold on to your seats and open your ears for this one! A powerful, modern and inquisitive saxophonist, don’t let Donny McCaslin’s boyish looks fool you. Ever since he graduated from Berklee College of Music two decades ago, he’s been on the Boston/New York jazz front lines. This concert puts him out front as a leader for the first time on a Jazz Series stage, but his two previous appearances – one as a member of Maria Schneider’s orchestra – with whom he still plays – and another working with Danilo Perez’s “Motherland” project – certainly speak to his talent and versatility.
A three-time GRAMMY®-nominee, the first of McCaslin’s 11 recordings as a leader, Exile and Discovery, dates to 1998. In 2014 he performed with David Bowie as the late musician’s saxophonist, resulting in a deeper musical relationship that ultimately led to McCaslin and members of his quartet – including two of today’s musicians, pianist/keyboardist Jason Lindner, who appeared previously here as a member of Anat Cohen’s Quartet, and bassist Tim Lefebvre – serving as the core band for Blackstar, the late singer’s final recording. Joining them today is drummer Nate Wood, whose credits include being a founding member of Kneebody.

“It was in many ways a dream come true although I'm not sure I could have dreamed of such a thing. And now I'm equal parts sad and grateful for everything that has happened.”

- Donnie McCaslin on recording David Bowie’s Black Star

“Mr. McCaslin has been an agreeable spark plug in New York jazz circles for the past two decades.”
