The Jazz Series is pleased to offer another quality glimpse into jazz’s future through the sounds of an already accomplished up-and-coming artist. Pianist/vocalist Champian Fulton is yet another 20-something who, in a relatively brief time, has gained a strong foothold within today’s jazz scene.

Born in 1985, she grew up in Norman, Okla., in a home filled with music. Her father, trumpeter/educator Stephen Fulton who joins his daughter on this tour and her mother, quickly recognized their daughter's interest in music at an early age. Young Champian studied piano with her grandmother when she was 5; she also took to singing. In 1993 when Stephen Fulton landed the position of Director of the Clark Terry Institute of Jazz, the family moved to its location: LeMars, Ia.

A brief stint in New York followed before the family moved back to Norman in 1998. Within a year Champian Fulton was performing regularly throughout the region. After graduating high school in 2003, Fulton moved to upstate New York to pursue a degree in jazz piano performance at SUNY Purchase Music Conservatory. After completing the program in 2006 she moved to New York City, where, during the last half-dozen years she has gradually gained notoriety and garnered favorable critical review.  These days, Fulton appears with regularity in some of the city’s main jazz venues: Birdland, Smalls and Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola to name but three. In doing so Fulton has played with jazz masters such as Jimmy Cobb, Frank Wess, Lou Donaldson and Louis Hayes, among many others.

Fulton has also followed in her jazz-educator father’s footsteps. She is currently  involved with LEAP NYC (Learning through An Expanded Arts Program), teaches Jazz appreciation to New York Public School students and participates in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s “Meet the Artist Program,” where she presents concerts and master classes to visiting schools.

Having released three CDs since 2007, Fulton will issue her newest effort, XXXX (XXX) in March 2013, a session that features her current quartet: father Stephen Fulton on trumpet, bassist Hide Tanaka, drummer Pete Zimmer and of course Ms. Fulton singing and playing piano.
