Pianist Billy Childs makes his first “We Always Swing”® Jazz Series appearance (and second Columbia appearance having performed with Chris Botti) kicking off the 2012/2013 season in a big way. The three-time GRAMMY® winner and10-time nominee arrives with a jaw-dropping quartet that includes Steve Wilson, the gifted multi-instrumentalist featured on the Jazz Series-produced CD HOME: Live in Columbia, bassist Scott Colley, who last appeared as a member of Herbie Hancock’s quartet and drummer Brian Blade, who brings a boatload of credits including most recently serving as one-fourth of Wayne Shorter’s great quintet. Likewise, Childs has no shortage of accolades dating to the late 1970s as a member of Freddie Hubbard’s and J.J. Johnson’s ensembles. Childs’ solo jazz recording career, now more than two decades strong, includes a number of varied recordings and orchestral commissions from: Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin, Kronos Quartet and Jazz at Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis.

“Billy Childs is a Los Angeles treasure. As a pianist, he possesses the improvisatory skills and powerful sense of swing one associates with world-class artists. He is a thoughtful observer of the jazz scene with a born educator's insightful view of its many complexities. And, perhaps most importantly, Childs is an inventive composer and arranger whose efforts in those areas consistently expand the dimensions of the jazz genre - and beyond. “
