Anita O'Day [10/18/1919--11/23/2006], who debuted with the Gene Krupa Orchestra in the 1940s, evolved into one of the greatest American jazz singers. This is her astonishing story -- a documented journey of survival told in a number of frank interviews with her and with those who knew her best: her peers and colleagues in the jazz world and the likes of George Wein, producer-kingpin of Newport Jazz Festival, and the late legendary critic Leonard Feather.
